What kind of walls does your office have?
What kind of walls does your office have?
This question popped into my head recently while chatting to @gourmandpixels a photographer who focuses on food photography. As the seasons change she was talking about how in the quest for natural light for her shots she was noting how the light changes in each room in her house. The best time of day to take pictures in each room. How the light can change the shade of wall colour or paper pattern depending on the time of day. It occurred to me that she was developing an intimacy with her home that went beyond most of the casual relationships the other people who had lived in that house for the last 100 years had enjoyed with those same four walls.
And that reminded me that when you’re a maker your ‘office’ walls are so very different to the traditional boxes that other people have to work within. We make our own walls. In the interesting places we have as studios or chose to work, outside in the places we visit for inspiration. The markets, design shows, art fairs we visit to sell our work. Some are even lucky enough to visit makers overseas as visitors or apprentices. Intangible walls. Sometimes well outside of our usual geographical stomping ground. We invite people into our workspace to share skills and they bring with them their own stories that expand the boundaries of our work space. We go on adventures in the name of creativity!
